Russian rookie Nikita Mazepin’s Formula One race debut lasted just three corners before he crashed his Haas in Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix season-opener.
Mazepin veered off into the barriers seconds after the start, with the new Aston Martin safety car deployed for the first time. He did not appear injured and was able to jog away from his wrecked car.
The 22-year-old had qualified last but started 18th after Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel collected a five place grid penalty for failing to respect warning flags in Saturday’s qualifying and dropped to the rear.

Social media was merciless in its mockery of Mazepin, whose start in Formula One has been anything but straightforward.
The Russian’s selection as one of Haas’ new drivers for the 2021 season shocked the racing world. He was chosen over Brit and fierce Formula Two rival Callum Ilott, who led Mazepin in the F2 championship.
Mazepin’s billionaire father Dmitry is a major investor in the Haas team. The rookie was also slammed for recent video footage of him groping a woman’s breast in the back of a car, for which he has since apologised.
In an Instagram stories clip in December, Mazepin reaches and appears to touch a woman sat in the back seat of a car in an inappropriate way. He later apologised for the video

Mazepin was also chosen to race for Haas over another Brit, Jack Aitken, who took no time in making clear his feelings about his rival’s crash.
‘Suddenly feeling a lot better about the 60 laps I managed in Sakhir before my spin,’ he tweeted, a wry dig at Mazepin that referred to Aitken’s performance at the Sakhir GP in December, where he finished 16th.
Many more F1 fans piled in on Mazepin’s misery, with one cheekily noting that he has ‘officially completed more Formula One formation laps than race laps’.
Another took a direct swipe at Mazepin having his father as a part-owner of Haas, writing that ‘money can but you an F1 seat but not talent and skills’ followed by a laughing emoji.
Mazepin had plenty of problems before the race even began after he spun out twice during qualification and angered several other drivers when he overtook them on the final sector of their out laps, something drivers generally do not do.
One Twitter user could not hide their glee as they wrote: ‘Well that completes a weekend of spins for Mazepin, doesn’t it.’
