Max Verstappen not willing to risk life or legs in search of greatness
Max Verstappen has ruled out a pursuit of motorsport’s iconic Triple Crown as he is unwilling to ‘risk his life or legs’.
The famous Triple Crown entails winning Formula One’s Monaco Grand Prix, IndyCar’s Indy 500 and the World Endurance Championship’s Le Mans 24 hours. To this day, only two-time F1 champion Graham Hill has accomplished the monumental feat.
Alpine F1 team’s Fernando Alonso and Juan Pablo Montoya are the only two current drivers needing one more leg to join Hill in the pantheon of greats, with Alonso missing an Indy 500 victory and Montoya yet to win Le Mans.
But despite having already won at Monaco and being the current F1 world champion, Verstappen has no interest in chasing the Triple Crown. The Dutchman insisted that the risk of injury by competing in the Indy 500 is too great.
He said: "I’ve no desire to chase the Triple Crown, at least, not IndyCar. I appreciate what they do. It’s insane, these drivers… I have a lot of respect for what they achieve there.
"But for me, I don’t need to risk my life there and potentially injure myself, your legs, whatever or… it’s just not worth it anymore, let’s say it like that."

Verstappen, however, is open to taking to the track at Le Mans in the near future. The Red Bull ace participated in a Virtual 24 Hours of Le Mans during the pandemic, which has whetted his appetite for at least a second crown.
He added: "Maybe Le Mans… I do like endurance races, so I will probably do some, hopefully soon, but for me, it doesn’t really matter.
"I, of course, try to be good in F1, I try to be good in whatever I do, but that desire of the triple crown or whatever – not interested."
