Max Verstappen admits Formula One isn’t the be-all-and-end-all for him as he goes in search of his maiden Drivers’ Championship this season. Verstappen currently leads the standings after claiming a second-placed finish at the Turkish Grand Prix earlier this month.

The Red Bull driver is hoping to halt Lewis Hamilton’s dominance and break the Briton’s four-year winning run.

Just two points separate the duo ahead of this weekend’s race in the United States.

“Even if we would finish second, I think we’d still have had a great season,” Verstappen admitted at the Turkish Grand Prix.

“At the end of the day, it’s not really going to change my life.”

This week, the Dutchman reiterated his beliefs as he visited Red Bull fuel partner ExxonMobil in Houston.

“To be honest, for some it does change your life but for me it doesn’t,” Verstappen said.

“It is of course my goal and I will always try to be the best I can be – but it’s not going to change my life in terms of how I live it or what I’m going to do afterwards.

“I see a lot of happy drivers or people who haven’t won a championship – I think whatever you do on track shouldn’t influence your personal life.

“At least I would not be a sore, sad person if I would never win a championship. I will have a lot of things I can also do after Formula One.

“For me Formula One is one part of your life, but actually the most important is what is outside of Formula One. Maybe [some] people don’t really know how to deal with that.”

And those comments show Verstappen has learnt a key lesson from title rival Hamilton and has taken a leaf out of the Mercedes driver’s book.

Hamilton is often in the spotlight for his endeavours away from F1, and has maintained a keenness to enjoy other areas of life outside of the sport.

The 36-year-old is an anti-racism campaigner and has also repeatedly spoken about environmental issues, human rights and animal rights.

He has been involved in a string of charity initiatives and has worked with UNICEF since 2012. He was chosen as a United Nations ambassador for education last year.

Hamilton also has a number of business interests away from F1 and launched a clothing line in 2018.

The driver has previously revealed that he has spent a decade writing and recording music and even featured on Christina Aguilera’s 2018 song Pipe under the pseudonym XNDA.

And it looks as though Verstappen is following suit by enjoying life outside of F1. Time will tell if it allows him to topple Hamilton on track.
