Logan Sargeant issues apology after Dutch GP qualifying where he upset Lewis Ham
American F1 rookie Logan Sargeant has apologised to his team after crashing out of the Dutch Grand Prix qualifying. The Williams driver made it through to Q3 for the first time in his career, and forced Lewis Hamilton to a shock early elimination, but his joy was short-lived thanks to the track’s wet conditions.
Sargeant, who is in his rookie season, managed to impress in qualifying despite the rainy conditions at Zandvoort. The driver narrowly made it into the top 10 with a quick time of 1:20.067 in Q2.
The time meant Lewis Hamilton could only finish the race in 13th place, missing out by just 0.084 seconds. The seven-time F1 champion saw Lando Norris, Carlos Sainz and Sargeant all make improved times and meaning Hamilton will join Lance Stroll, Pierre Gasly and Nico Hulkenberg outside of the top 10.
Despite the impressive time clocked by Sargeant, his second lap proved less fruitful. Just two turns into the lap the Florida-born driver hit a wet patch and span off the track and slamming into the barrier.
The driver can be heard telling the team: “I’m ok, I’m sorry” following the crash. After returning to the pen Sargeant reflected on the incident.
“It’s disappointing, obviously never want to leave the team with a damaged car, and one that’s pretty damaged as well, so that’s the disappointing part,” he said. “But plenty of positives going through qualifying, I think Q1 was good.
“When it was all on the line on Q2 I was able to put a lap in as well to transfer to Q3. But we gelt good all week and I felt good in the drive yesterday but I touched the white line, which must have been wet, so there’s really no saving it. Disappointed and sorry to the team.”

When asked how he could perform tomorrow, he added: “I think my race pace yesterday, my long-run pace was really good. I’m happy with where the car was at. Obviously we’ll have to rebuild it overnight, so hopefully we can get it as close as where we had it the past few days for tomorrow, and reset and go again.”
Lewis Hamilton was also left frustrated with his performance, saying: “I did two fast laps at the end and the tyres overheated so I couldn’t improve on the last lap. I have got the same car as in qualifying which wasn’t really good. Hopefully when the car is a bit heavier maybe I will be able to progress forward but this is not an easy track to move forwards on. Tomorrow is a new day and I will give it my best.”
Tomorrow’s Dutch Grand Prix at 12:30pm will see Max Verstappen start in pole position with Lando Norris in second and George Russel in third.
