Lewis Hamilton has been eerily quiet following his controversial world title loss against Max Verstappen. The Mercedes star, who is a frequent poster on social media, has not spoken since his immediate snap post-race interview at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Hamilton refused to attend the post-race press conference and there was an empty seat left alongside Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz.
The Brit was knighted a week later and he has not posted anything on his social media channels.
The only activity spotted on the 36-year-old’s accounts is that he unfollowed everybody on Instagram
This has led to some suggestions that the seven-time world champion may not return to F1 next season, despite having two years remaining on his Mercedes contract.
But Hamilton’s younger brother Nicolas has attempted to explain why Lewis is taking time away from social media.
“I think he is just having a bit of a social media break, which I don’t blame him for,” he told fans while playing a video game on streaming platform Twitch.
“Social media can be a very toxic place. But he’s cool though. He’s fine.”
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has also offered an explanation as to why Hamilton is remaining quiet.
“We are all wavering in emotions and Lewis most of all,” said Wolff, quoted by Motorsport-total.com.
“He won the World Championship until the last lap, and then everything is taken away from you from one second [to the next]. Of course you lose faith because you can’t understand what has just happened.
“The silence is there, of course, because he simply lacks words as well.”
