Lewis Hamilton waiting before making space trip ‘because those things blow up’
Lewis Hamilton wants to fly a rocket into space – but not until he is convinced it will not crash.
The seven-time Formula One Brit world champion told SpaceX chief Elon Musk he is willing to pilot one of his missions. He said he is determined to blast off one day – but wants `some other people go first because those things blow up on the way up'. Hamilton, 38, said he told Musk his plans when the Tesla and Twitter multi-billionaire attended one of his parties in Austin, Texas, US.
The racing driver, who lies fourth in this year's F1 championship, said: "Elon’s been to my party in Austin the last two years. It’s like a dinner party I’ve had and I’d have these people come around.

"It’s not the easiest thing to speak to someone like that because his mind is expanded. It’s on such another level, you know. So I get all nervous when I’m talking to him. Of course I talked to him about did we land on the Moon? Where are we going next?"
Asked if he planned to go into space Lewis replied: "I am going, yes, at some stage. But I’ll let some other people go first because those things blow up on the way up.
Where will Lewis Hamilton finish in the 2023 World Drivers' Championship? Let us know in the comments section below.
"He’s talking about going to Mars but I’m ready to go to space at any stage. I told him that I’d fly the ship but I think it’s all automated."
For now, though, Hamilton will remain focussed on the 2023 F1 season as racing returns this weekend in Azerbaijan after a four-week break.
Hamilton and Mercedes will be hoping to build on his second place finish at the Australian Grand Prix at the start of April as they look to climb up both the Drivers' and Constructors' Championships.
