Lewis Hamilton has revealed that he still speaks to former trainer and physio Angela Cullen on a daily basis after the duo announced that they had parted ways during the build-up to this weekend’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Hamilton worked alongside Cullen for a period of seven years after beginning their partnership in 2016 and won four of his seven Drivers’ Championship titles with the 48-year-old in his corner.
Cullen was regularly spotted by Hamilton’s side at Grand Prix weekends during their time working together and not only served as his trainer and physio, but as a rock for the Brit in the paddock. He announced via Instagram on Friday that Cullen would be stepping down from her role and shed further light on the situation in Jeddah by insisting that there is no bad blood as a result of their split.
“Angela and I are good,” said Hamilton. “She’s in a different phase of her life, we’re still super close. We keep texting every day, massively supportive and I’m massively supportive of her, so grateful to have had her with me on this journey. She’s one of my closest friends and continues to be.”
It remains to be seen how much of a blow losing Cullen will prove to be for Hamilton in the paddock as he looks to return to winning ways with Mercedes amid a hugely difficult period for the struggling German team. The 38-year-old has not taken the chequered flag at any race since winning in Saudi Arabia two years ago and will have a difficult task to end his barren spell on Sunday after only qualifying in eighth position.

The strength of Hamilton’s bond with Cullen is evidenced by the matching tattoos of the word ‘loyalty’ they share on their wrists, with the Mercedes driver previously hailing her ability to help him maintain a positive mindset in spite of the challenges he has faced over the last few years.
“People for sure won’t understand it, naturally, because they see it from a distance, but she has been one of the greatest things that’s happened to me in my life,” explained Hamilton back in 2020.

“I’ve been fortunate to work with a lot of people and she’s the single hardest-working woman that I get to be around. She’s focused, selfless, and she makes my weekends peaceful. Every day I wake up, whatever time it is, she’s just positive, never a single day has she been negative, so that’s very, very important.
“I think it’s important in life to put positive people around you. You can’t be going around with dead weights, you can’t be going around with people who don’t inspire you to be better and lift you up when you’re down. You need to be around people who can do that for you, and she’s one of them.”
