Lewis Hamilton sends message to fans as he enjoys downtime by sea

Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton has posted a defiant message on social media as he enjoyed his break from the F1 calendar at a seaside location. The seven-time world champion had a disappointing opening two rounds of the 2023 F1 season, but was encouraged by finishing second place at the Australian Grand Prix earlier this month.
Due to the China Grand Prix being cancelled due to concerns over the country’s zero-Covid policy there is a three-week gap between races. Hamilton has taken the opportunity to take some downtime by the sea and voiced his renewed optimism.
The Mercedes star posted a selfie of himself on Instagram with the sea in the background. The picture was accompanied with inspirational message: “New week, new opportunity to be great. I’m still on my mission. I still have ways to go. I know you’re with me, and I’m with you too.”
The picture has been viewed over 986,000 times within 24 hours with fans quick to send Hamilton their message of support. Meanwhile, Hamilton’s huge fanbase have launched a petition to have the result of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix overturned which is gaining momentum and has 80,000 signatures.
This was after Verstappen won the 2021 Drivers’ Championship in controversial circumstances during the final race of the season. Hamilton was cruelly denied a record eighth world title in Abu Dhabi which was followed by a nightmare season in 2022 in which he failed to win a single race.
Verstappen already has a healthy lead in this year’s Drivers’ Championship after three races, despite Hamilton battling with the two-time world champion during the opening stages of the Australian Grand Prix. The Mercedes star also has to worry about his own team-mate George Russell who has qualified quicker than him in all three races so far this season.

Former British F1 world champion Damon Hill has raised doubts about whether Hamilton can still compete with the younger drivers. Hill told the F1 Nation podcast: “George is super quick and he’s revelling in the early part of his career and he’s got this speed.
“I don’t know if Lewis has acknowledged that he can’t match that, I’m sure he will do eventually. I’m sure he will do eventually but it’s possible that instinctive unconscious speed is starting to leave him. It does happen.”
