Lewis Hamilton has paid a touching tribute to his “two mums” in a special Mothers Day message ahead of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. The seven-time champion was raised by his biological mum, Carmen Larbalestier, but she split with Hamilton’s dad Anthony when he was just two.
At 12 years old, Hamilton moved to live with his dad Anthony and step mum Linda. He told Sky Sports F1: “Well I have two mums. My biological mum, she raised me until I was eight, played the most important part in my life.
“She’s the one that taught me about empathy and compassion for others and the world. I was lucky enough to have a second mother, my step mum Linda.
“It’s never easy, I would imagine, to adopt a child or be a step parent. Happy Mothers Day. It’s such a vital role and I’m just so grateful that I had them both with me all the way. The love of my life and thank you for always being there for me.”

Hamilton’s mother Carmen joined him at Windsor Castle when the British star picked up his knighthood in December 2021. Ahead of last season, the 38-year-old praised his mum and suggested he intended to change his name as a tribute.
He explained: “I’m really proud of my family’s name, Hamilton. None of you might know that my mum’s name is Larbalestier and I am just about to put that in my name.
“I don’t fully understand the idea that when people get married the woman loses their name. I really want my mum to continue on with the Hamilton name.”

Ahead of last year’s season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix, Hamilton confirmed ‘Larbalestier’ would be included as part of his middle name in the near future.
He added: “It was going to be a surprise, I was going to tell her first but I let it slip out. My mum was very happy, proud and emotional. I have already applied. It won’t be a surname – it will be an addition to my middle name.
“It’s about embracing your own family. You only have one and there will never be any people like your family. I want my family’s names to transcend hopefully down to the next generation and I don’t want my mum’s name to be forgotten.”
