Mercedes are set to imminently confirm who will drive alongside Lewis Hamilton next season, with George Russell in firm contention to take over from Valtteri Bottas in the hotseat. And he did his favours no harm whatsoever last Sunday after placing second in what was a chaotic Belgian Grand Prix.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has revealed that he has made his decision over the number two seat next term, and it was certainly a hot topic of conversation all weekend at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium.

And with the travelling F1 circuit heading to the Netherlands this weekend and with talk dying down for the time being, Hamilton has done everything to ensure Mercedes’ decision remains a major talking point.

On Hamilton’s Instagram account on Tuesday evening, the seven-time world champion uploaded a cute photo of him alongside his beloved dog Roscoe on the couch.

However, fans were quick to recognise that Hamilton didn’t tag his dog’s Instagram account, but instead used Russell’s social medga tag.

But quickly realising his error, Hamilton changed the Instagram tag to Roscoe’s but then decided to delete the social media post altogether as fans lapped up the mistake.

“George for Mercedes 2022 confirmed”, were the theme of the comments on Tuesday as Hamilton fuelled talk even further about Mercedes’ future.

Russell has been tipped to take over from Bottas at Mercedes with plenty of potential on his shoulders, while the Finn driver has endured a disappointing 2021 season to date.

Russell gained his first points at the Hungary Grand Prix before the mid-season break, before bagging a fantastic second-place finish in Belgium after rain caused havoc last weekend.

Meanwhile, Bottas has endured a frustrating season – currently sitting fourth in the Drivers’ Standings, a massive 94.5 points behind his Mercedes team-mate Hamilton.

And with Mercedes’ imminent announcement dominating headlines, plenty of F1’s top stars have had their say.

And following Russell’s impressive performance in Belgium, F1 motorsport director Ross Brawn believes there is “only one decision” to make for Mercedes.

In his post-race column, Brawn said: “We all know George Russell has a fantastic talent. We have seen it a lot at Williams, and we saw it amplified at Mercedes, when he stood in for Lewis Hamilton at the Sakhir Grand Prix last year.

“George’s performance reminded me a lot of Fernando Alonso when he drove at a wet Spa for Minardi in 2001.

“He was mighty impressive in a car that clearly was not up to the job. In those conditions, the ratio of driver to car changes – and we saw that with George on Saturday.

“He doesn’t have a front row car but in those tricky conditions in qualifying, he trounced people with far better cars than he had. In my view, there is only one decision for Mercedes next year with regards the second seat.”
