Lewis Hamilton has hit back at Red Bull boss Christian Horner, who labelled the seven-time world champion “desperate” after colliding with Max Verstappen on the opening lap of the British Grand Prix, as the two battled it out for the lead.
Horner blasted Hamilton after the race, as his Red Bull driver ended up in hospital after a high-speed crash at turn nine at Silverstone moments after the lights had gone out.
Hamilton was penalised with a ten-second penalty during the race for causing a collision but fought his way back to take victory at his home circuit, however, Horner described the win as ‘hallow’ and claimed he had ‘put a competitor at risk’ with his actions.
Hamilton had a strong start off the line, with Verstappen holding on to the lead as the duo went wheel-to-wheel, with Hamilton keen for victory in front of his home crowd.
But the two crashed at turn nine, as Hamilton’s front right tyre made contact with the rear left of Verstappen’s Red Bull, which sent the Dutchman spinning into the barriers in what Horner described as “the biggest crash of his career.”

The incident brought out the red flag, with Red Bull immediately on the radio to the race director, placing the blame firmly on Hamilton.
Speaking to Sky Sports F1, the Red Bull boss said: “Max has incurred a 51g accident. Lewis Hamilton is an eight-time world champion, he shouldn’t be making maneuvers like that. It’s unacceptable.
“Thank goodness, the biggest result for us today is that he’s uninjured, he’s having to go to the hospital for [precautionary checks.]
“I hope Lewis is very happy with himself, he stuck a wheel up the inside in a corner you just know you don’t do that. You just don’t stick a wheel up the inside at Copse, in that corner, in those circumstances.
“He was nowhere near ahead, it was contact, left front to right rear, and the speed they’re travelling, it’s one of the fastest corners in the championship.

“Lewis has got more than enough experience to know that’s unacceptable and, as I say, I”m just very disappointed that a driver of his calibre should make such a move.
“It’s dangerous, he’s put a competitor at risk, it looked desperate and thank goodness he was uninjured. Max is in the hospital getting himself checked out.
“I don’t care what Lewis has to say, have a look on your own analysis, draw your own comparisons, for me, that’s a hollow victory.”
Speaking directly after the race though, Hamilton dismissed Horner’s comments and felt he had deserved the win as much as anyone else.
“I don’t really have anything to say to Christian, it doesn’t feel hallow,” Hamilton said.
“It’s not just about me like I said this is not the way everything I would want to happen in the race”
“It’s important for us to take a step back, emotions are running high.
“I know what it’s like to lose points within a team, so I don’t have anything to add.”
