Lewis Hamilton has warned the cost of motorsport is one of the sport’s biggest hurdles on the eve of the new season. Hamilton stressed the cost of getting started in motorsport was a major “problem” in getting more youngsters involved.

However, he hinted things could be getting better with more opportunities He identified the issue in the latest episode of We are England, which follows teenage racing sensations Lewis Appiagyei and Ruben Stanislaus.

The pair got a chance to sit down with the seven-time champion at the pair’s second visit to the Mercedes base. Hamilton then made the admission when asked what needed to be done to overcome obstacles in the sport.

He explained: “Well the problem with our sport is it is expensive. But there are a lot of people out there today, companies that are looking at improving diversity and inclusion. There’s a lot of companies out there that want to be partnered with the right message.

“It’s not just what you do on track, but it’s also how you present yourself. How you handle yourself when you lose.” The BBC show has followed Appigayei and Stanislaus’ journey as they aim to rise through the motorsport ladders.

The pair began their career karting at Buckmore Park in Kent where they broke track records. The two then made the transition to cars this season with a run in the Praga Cup UK.

However, costs are a major issue for the pair and the desperate search for cash to continue racing is a major theme in the show.

Stanislaus’ father Steve explained: “We still need sponsors on board to take them onto that next level. It’s a simple equation, the money just needs to be found to drive the car. Without that, the career just comes to a standstill.

Hamilton’s father Anthony helped finance the Briton’s early career, taking two jobs and remortgaging his house to pay for karting. However, Hamilton was picked up by McLaren boss Ron Dennis in the late 1990s, who helped pay for his career before handing him an F1 seat in 2007.

Anthony Hamilton has previously warned finding another Hamilton could be difficult due to the increase in money needed. He added: “We worked hard with what we had and were blessed to have been spotted by Ron Dennis [of McLaren] and Mercedes but that isn’t enough anymore.

“If costs continue to escalate at the junior level, and junior series remain financially unregulated, then I think Lewis will be the last of his generation.”
