Lewis Hamilton says he found Fernando Alonso’s latest dig at him amusing.

Ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix, the Spanish veteran suggested in an interview that Max Verstappen's two world titles were of greater value than Hamilton’s seven.

“I have a lot of respect for Lewis, but it is different when you win seven world titles and you only had to fight with your team-mate,” Alonso told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. “A championship has less value when you have fewer titles, but have had to fight against other drivers with equal or even better material.”

He later attempted to backtrack by tweeting: “Please, all the titles are amazing, well deserved and inspiring. Incomparable to each other. Let’s enjoy champions and legends of our current time.”

Hamilton, in his first year in F1, and Alonso had one tempestuous season as teammates at McLaren in 2007, with the pair finishing level on points as Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen pinched the title at the final race in Brazil.

Earlier this season, Alonso called Hamilton an “idiot” and said he only knows how to race from the front following an opening-lap collision at the Belgian Grand Prix in August.

Hamilton responded to Alonso’s most recent jibe on social media with a thumbs up emoji and a picture of him on the top step of the podium after winning the 2007 US Grand Prix with his hand on his then teammate’s shoulder. The Briton was asked about his response after finishing second in Mexico City on Sunday.

“I don’t have a lot to say about it. It does make me giggle a little bit, to be honest,” said Hamilton. “I have tried to be really respectful over the years. When I have ever been asked who has been the best driver, I have always tried to give praise to him [Alonso].

“It is definitely interesting to see the comments that are made, but it doesn’t really matter so that is why I just gave the thumbs up.”
