Lewis Hamilton contract must have Ferrari and Red Bull licking their lips

F1: Lewis Hamilton goes cross-country skiing

Lewis Hamilton has only committed his future to Mercedes for one year meaning his old dream of driving in the famous red of Ferrari could still become a reality. F1 is set to undergo major regulation changes next year which could bring the field must closer.

Mercedes have dominated motorsport’s premier competition for the last seven years, winning both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championship.

The Silver Arrows are expected to continue their stronghold this season as Hamilton looks to pull away from Michael Schumacher’s world title record.

Ferrari and Red  Bull could be offered the chance to close the gap on Mercedes from 2022 which major rule changes set to take place.

The last time such alterations were made to the rules was when hybrid engines became compulsary in 2014.

That brought an end to Sebastian Vettel’s four-year reign as Mercedes grappled the power from Red Bull.

A series of aerodynamic changes will be enforced next year, along with other technical regulations, which could throw the title fight wide open.

Hamilton is free to discuss his future with whoever he and the opportunity to jump ship is there because he only agreed a 12-month contract extension.

It is unlikely Ferrari or Red Bull would pass up on the chance to sign such a prestigious driver.

And if they can offer a similar amount of money, believed to be around £40million a year, then Hamilton’s head may be turned.

DON’T MISS

Yes, the Brit will be 37 years old by the time the 2022 campaign rolls around and will arguably be past his peak.

But the experience Hamilton would bring to the likes of Ferrari and Red Bull could definitely help them launch their own title bid.

You can never count out the Stevenage-born star and his latest deal opens the door for a driver merry-go-round at the end of the year.

Charles Leclerc is under contract with Ferrari until 2024, one year longer than his new team-mate Sergio Perez.

Max Verstappen apparently has a clause in his contract which means he can leave Red Bull if he fails to finish in the top three of the Drivers’ Championship.

But if Hamilton became available then Red Bull and Ferrari would almost certainly be licking their lips.
