Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen title battle to be shown for free on Channel 4

The incredible finale to the epic world championship battle between Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull star Max Verstappen will be shown live on Channel 4.

Sky F1, who traditionally broadcast the races, have reached an agreement with the free-to-air channel to provide coverage of this weekend’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The two rivals are locked in an intense battle for the world championship in what has been one of the greatest F1 seasons in the sport’s history, with both drivers and team principals engaging in bitter battles on and off the track.

They have won 17 races between them in 2021 and enter the finale in Abu Dhabi tied on points – just the second time, after the 1974 championship tussle between McLaren's Emerson Fittipaldi and Ferrari's Clay Regazzoni, that such a scenario has played out in F1 history.

Sunday's dramatic race saw two red flags, multiple virtual safety car interventions and five drivers crash out before seven-time world champion Hamilton won his eighth race of the season.

The two F1 title contenders fought for the race lead throughout, with many dramatic moments and plenty of exhilarating restarts.

The Brit took the chequered flag to tie the drivers' standings ahead of next weekend's finale in Abu Dhabi, while Verstappen finished second despite being dealt two time penalties which set him back for a total of 15 seconds.

It sets up this weekend perfectly as a winner-takes-all clash, and Sky F1 are expecting plenty of viewers after over 2.6million tuned into the inaugural Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Channel 4 usually only show the British Grand Prix at Silverstone live, with the rest of their coverage in highlights, but they have shown one-off events before – including the 2019 Cricket World Cup final when England dramatically defeated New Zealand.

The channel also televised Emma Raducanu defeating fellow teenager Leylah Fernandez to win the US Open in September.

The travelling F1 party heads to the Yas Marina Circuit for the epic finale this weekend, and the action can't come quickly enough.
