Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen incidents leave Leclerc gobsmacked

Charles Leclerc, Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz were all astonished as they watched back Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen incidents in the Singapore Grand Prix cooling room. Perez stormed home to his second win of the season after pulling away from Leclerc late on. Sainz comfortably secured the final spot on the podium, ahead of the pair of McLarens.

All three were chatting in the cool-down room when a replay of Hamilton’s crash came on the screen. Sainz broke the conversation by exclaiming ‘Wow!’ as he saw the Mercedes star slam into the barrier.

Hamilton was able to reverse out of the wall and drive to the pits to have a new front wing fitted, which set him back 14 seconds. The 37-year-old old was lucky to be able to continue and ended up snatching ninth place.

Meanwhile, the top three also got to see Verstappen’s brakes lock and plumes of smoke blowing across the track during the latter stages of the race. Sky Sports F1 TV cameras captured the reaction of Leclerc, Perez and Sainz and they all look astounded by the incident.

Verstappen was able to rejoin the track but needed to pit for fresh tyres. Once he got up and running again, the Dutchman stormed to seventh place. The Red Bull star could have won the world title this weekend but his championship celebrations have been postponed until the Japanese Grand Prix next weekend.

Perez is hoping his team-mate can get the job done in Suzuka. “I think it’s nice for Max to get it in Japan and for the team and for Honda,” he said. “All in all a fantastic day.”

Perez added: “It was certainly my best performance [in Singapore]. I controlled the race. The last three laps were so intense – when I got out of the car, I felt it. I gave everything today.”
