Lewis Hamilton has taken aim at the FIA as he discussed his battle with F1's governing body over their jewellery clampdown this season.

The rule has in fact been in place since 2005 – before Hamilton had driven his first F1 event. Despite racing while wearing two earrings and a nose piercing since his first race for McLaren in 2007, Hamilton faced being banned from the British GP last month as bosses looked to clamp down on the guidelines.

Hamilton has previously failed to remove a nose stud and several earrings, which he claimed were 'nearly impossible' to take out as well as another piercing which he failed to explain where it was.

The 37-year-old has now admitted to lying to the FIA about the hidden piercing. He told Vanity Fair: “I was just f***ing with it,” “I don’t have any other piercings anywhere. But I love that there’s this thinking: S**t, has he got his balls pierced? Since I was a kid I’ve never loved being told what to do.”

He also appeared to take a swipe at the sport's bosses following their introduction of the strict rules, saying: "People love to have power. And to enforce power."

When asked if he felt the enforcement of the jewellery rule was directed towards him, Hamilton replied: “I mean, yeah. Because I’m the only one that has jewellery on, really.”

Hamilton started in karting as a child before working his way up through the categories before joining the McLaren Young Driver Programme in 1998.

After moving up to F1, the British driver finished runner-up in the 2007 championship before winning his first of seven world titles.

“I didn’t feel like I was welcome,” he said talking about his arrival in F1. “I didn’t feel like I was accepted.

“God knows how many of these drivers say: ‘This is not what a Formula 1 driver is. That’s not how you behave. This is not how you do it. Tattoos? No! A Formula 1 driver doesn’t have tattoos! A Formula 1 driver doesn’t have a personality—and piercings!'”
