Lando Norris has sent an emotional message of thanks to his supporters following an incident at Wembley in which his £40,000 watch was stolen after being targeted by thugs.

The 21-year-old is said to have been surrounded by a group of people after making his way back to his car following Italy's win over England, which is a McLaren GT.

Having been grabbed by one, his prototype Richard Mille watch was forcibly taken, leaving the British-Belgian racing driver shaken, but thankfully unharmed.

While the McLaren team had offered a statement shortly after the incident had been reported on, the rising Formula One star has now spoken to his supporters on social media.

He told his 3.4million Instagram followers: "Hi world. Thanks for all the messages everyone.

"Really means a lot to see so many messages of kindness and love from you all.

"Thought I'd let you know that I am doing well I'm trying to make sure that I am ready and in the right zone for this weekend to perform at my best.

"Love you all and can't wait to see so many of you back at the track this weekend."

Before Norris had commented on the incident, his McLaren team released a statement to confirm he was "understandably shaken" but unharmed following the ordeal.

They said: "McLaren Racing can confirm that Lando Norris was involved in an incident, after the Euro 2020 final match at Wembley, during which the watch he was wearing was taken.

"Thankfully, Lando was unharmed but he is understandably shaken. The team is supporting Lando and we are sure that racing fans will join us in wishing him all the best for the British Grand Prix this weekend.

"As this is now a police matter we cannot comment further."

The Metropolitan Police announced following the final that they made 86 arrests in connection with the fixture in general, with a "small group" of ticketless fans forcing their way into the stadium.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor said: "Clearly there was behaviour from some individuals that was unacceptable.

"How Wembley managed the fans inside the venue is for Wembley and policing is for outside.

"But it is a really important relationship and we worked really closely with them on the night for unprecedented scenes that were challenging but we dealt with quickly and effectively."
