Lewis Hamilton has broken an eight-week social media silence as rumours about his future in Formula 1 continue to swirl.

The seven-time world champion had not posted since he controversially lost out on a record-breaking eighth world title to Max Verstappen in the final race of the 2021 season.

Hamilton was cruising to victory in Abu Dhabi until a crash from Williams’ Nicholas Latifi set in motion a series of events that would see a final-lap shootout between the two title-contenders.

Hamilton’s (left) future is not confirmed after Toto Wolff said the Briton was ‘disillusioned’

Verstappen, on fresh tyres, easily overtook a defending Hamilton to achieve race victory and with it, his maiden Drivers World Championship.

Mercedes and their team principal Toto Wolff were left furious by the result and it was Wolff who first cast doubt on the likelihood of Hamilton returning to the sport.

The 50-year-old Austrian said he and the team’s star driver were ‘disillusioned’ with the sport following the controversial safety car that led to Hamilton’s defeat. Wolff also did not confirm whether Hamilton would be back in the Mercedes seat for 2022 despite having a contract with the team until the end of 2023.

The Brit was denied an eighth title in controversial circumstances at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

As the off-season rumbled on, rumours of Hamilton retiring began to grow and the Brit’s silence only added to the speculation.

However, he has now returned to Instagram for the first time since the day before the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

He posted a picture of himself smiling at the Grand Canyon alongside the caption ‘I’ve been gone. Now I’m back!’

Since the defeat and with rumours about his future swirling, he had been silent on social media

But he has returned with a picture of him smiling at the Grand Canyon and said ‘Now I’m back!’

The 37-year-old did not comment on whether he would be returning to F1 but his reappearance on social media could be a sign he will be back in the paddock come March and the start of the 2022 season.

One factor that may make up Hamilton’s mind is whether race director Michael Masi is still in a job.

As race director, it was Masi who made the controversial safety car call that opened the door for Verstappen and Mercedes have reportedly demanded the 44-year-old Australian be fired from his role.
