Hamilton told ‘to resign’ by F1 icon who says ‘rag trade would be suitable’

Lewis Hamilton has been urged to quit Formula 1 by racing icon Sir Jackie Stewart.

Hamilton has endured a tumultuous last six months, losing the 2021 title in highly contentious fashion to Max Verstappen before a troubled start to 2022 as Mercedes struggled to get on top of F1’s seismic regulation changes.

Given the manner of his defeat to Verstappen in the Abu Dhabi finale, speculation abounded that a disillusioned Hamilton could walk away from the sport after 15 years at the top level. After weeks of social media silence, Hamilton eventually confirmed his continued presence in F1, but his hopes of an eighth title are over for this year while he has been regularly beaten by new teammate George Russell.

Hamilton certainly has a life beyond F1 and is passionate about music and fashion. With that in mind, three-time world champion Stewart has advised the 37-year-old to retire and focus on his other interests.

“It’s time for him to resign,” Stewart told Convex Conversation podcast. “He’s got music, he’s got culture, he loves clothing and the rag trade would be absolutely suitable for him. I’m sure he’ll be very successful because he’s been earning a huge amount of money — rightfully so because he’s been the best of his time.

"Lewis is in that group of the Ayrton Sennas and the Alain Prosts — or even the Jackie Stewarts maybe. It’s a pity he wasn’t resigning at the top but I don’t think that’s going to happen now.

“But nevertheless it’s wiser to stop than go through all the pain of not being able to do what you did before. He’s carried the sport well. I’d like to see him resigning now.”

Following a tough start to the season, Hamilton was upbeat after Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix, where he finished third and showed strong pace throughout the race.
