Lewis Hamilton suffered a nightmare finish to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after skidding off the track with two laps remaining.

The Mercedes star was attempting a move on Sergio Perez at the first corner when he got his angles all wrong.

Hamilton slammed on his breaks after realising his error but it was too late as he overshot the turn and went down the escape road.

He returned to the track in last place and could make up one position before the chequered flag – finishing 15th and ahead of only Nicholas Latifi.

Such was the magnitude of Hamilton's error that he even finished behind Haas driver Nikita Mazepin.

Hamilton's afternoon went from good to bad in a matter of seconds after it appeared the Briton would claim victory and overtake Max Verstappen in the Drivers' Championship.

Verstappen had been leading but suffered a huge tyre blowout in the closing stages which ended his race and brought out a red flag.

His championship rival began the standing restart second on the grid and was looking at a solid haul of points, irrespective of whether he could win the race or not.

Hamilton made his charge when the lights went out for the second time in the race and appeared to have passed Perez on the run to the first corner.

But disaster struck and the 36-year-old's aggressive bid to take control of the race backfired as he shot off the track and tumbled down the order.

With Hamilton out of the way, Perez hung on to claim victory ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Pierre Gasly.
