Guenther Steiner has admitted he held private talks with Daniel Ricciardo as the Australian searches for an F1 comeback. Steiner revealed the pair chatted on the way to the Australian Grand Prix which was Ricciardo’s first paddock appearance in his role as Red Bull test driver.

However, Steiner has stressed the duo didn’t discuss any future deal for a race return from next season. The Haas boss made the comments when asked if there was any truth in links between Ricciardo and Haas.

The Austrian told Sky Sports News: “Not at the moment, Daniel’s with Red Bull, I don’t know for how long. I actually was with Danny on the plane to Australia so we had a little bit of a chat. Not about the contract just about general life, we didn’t even go there to be honest.

“I don’t know, Dany wanted to take a year out and then see what he wants to do next and I think when he’s ready he will phone people up and say ‘I’m ready again.’” Haas was linked with Ricciardo last season after the Australian star was axed by McLaren.

However, no deal was struck and Ricciardo limped out of the sport to enjoy time away from racing. Netflix’s new Drive to Survive show revealed money was a major reason behind Haas not acquiring Ricciardo’s services.

In the series, Kevin Magnussen suggested Ricciardo as an option to replace Mick Schumacher for 2023. But, Steiner quickly shoots down the suggestion as he highlights how money would be a major issue.

He is heard saying: “We can’t afford him, Kevin. He wants f***ing $10 million minimum.” However, Ricciardo may snub a move to the American-based team anyway as he leaves strict instructions for team bosses.

The Australian has admitted he is not interested in racing for a team at the back of the grid as he only has eyes for a top team. He explained: “I still am at a point where it’s not at any cost, it’s not just to be back on the grid.

“A lot of the reason for taking this year off was that I didn’t want to just jump back into a car, any car just to be one of the F1 drivers. And I still don’t see myself starting from scratch and rebuilding a career and going at it for another decade.

“I appreciate I might not have every opportunity under the sun, but I want to win. I want to be back with a top team and obviously a team where I have my confidence back and my mojo.”
