George Russell has predicted Mercedes could win their first race of the year at the United States Grand Prix next month. The Mercedes star claimed the Circuit of the Americas could suit the car better and allow him and Lewis Hamilton to challenge.

It comes after a difficult season for the German manufacturer after challenging for the title just 12 months ago. Russell has warned they are likely to struggle in Singapore after poor performances at other street tracks in 2022.

However, the former Williams man is optimistic about the team’s chances of breaking their winless streak in Austin. When asked where a victory could come for the Silver Arrows, he responded: “I’d probably say maybe Austin; I think Austin could be a circuit that suits us better – but I truly don’t know.

“I think as a team we’re making a huge amount of progress at the moment and [we’re] understanding the car more and more.

“Hopefully as we develop the car further, we can take some further gains.” Although Mercedes have been unable to challenge title favourites Red Bull, Hamilton and Russell are still the third fastest car at most circuits and hope to battle Ferrari for second place in the Constructors’ Championship.

Mercedes have looked more competitive at high-downforce circuits with Hamilton almost challenging Max Verstappen for victory at the Dutch Grand Prix. Since Canada, Mercedes have looked closer to the frontrunners which has allowed them to get back into the mix.

The pair have picked up 13 podiums between them all season and have looked able to challenge Ferrari in recent weeks. Russell now lies just 16 points behind Charles Leclerc in the title fight and beating the Scuderia is one of the team’s main goals for the rest of the season.

Wolff was optimistic when he asked if P2 in the standings was a realistic goal for the rest of the campaign. He also claimed it would soften the blow of struggling over the course of the season.

The Mercedes boss explained: “I think it’s all to play [for]. We just need to do the best every single weekend and see whether we come out second. Maybe a bit, but there [are] more blows that we are ending up 30 seconds behind the leader, and that is the gap that we need to catch up.”

Success means Russell could become only the second driver in F1 history to finish as runner-up having never secured a career win.
