Ferrari CEO addresses whether his team could quit F1 over Red Bull and Mercedes
Antiques Roadshow guest brings in Lewis Hamilton's overalls
Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna has insisted that the team remains fully committed to F1 despite being unable to match the success of Red Bull and Mercedes in recent seasons. Ferrari are the most successful team in the sport’s history, but have failed to claim a championship win in either category since 2008.
Their dismal record looks set to continue this season, as drivers Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc sat sixth and seventh respectively in the standings, behind both Red Bulls, both Mercedes and Fernando Alonso with Aston Martin. With Ferrari struggling to replicate the form of previous generations, it could be reasonable to suggest that they may pull back from the sport.
Despite being one of F1’s most recognisable teams, Vigna has spoken out on whether they may draw back from the sport and shut down the notion that Ferrari could scale back their commitments. “Sport is very important for us,” he said.
“Racing is in the DNA of our company. So Formula 1, world endurance championship, and we keep investing there because we see a lot of technologies that can go from the track to the road.”

Leclerc and Sainz will be hoping for improved performances next up in the Canadian Grand Prix, as they attempt to emulate the success of Ferrari’s 24 Hours of Le Mans team. Reserve driver Antonio Giovinazzi won the 2023 edition alongside Alessandro Pier Guidi and James Calado as their #51 car claimed the team’s first win since 1965.
Ferrari were able to overturn the competition that was previously dominated by Toyota which will have provided plenty of motivation for Leclerc, who was in attendance and even admitted that he would like to compete in the race one day. Vigna hopes that the surprise victory can be a catalyst for future success.

“It once again demonstrates that Ferrari is unique and that we make unparalleled cars,” he said. “It is a unique car. The next goal? To continue winning.”
Vigna hopes that he can provide Leclerc and Sainz with an improved car as he admitted that the team’s early-season disappointment has not been a cause of concern, but instead the chief hopes to learn from their errors in order to improve going forward.
“Was the bad start of the season in Formula 1 stressful for me?” Vigna added as he discussed the lack of podium finishes alongside Red Bull and Mercedes. “You know, I have more significant reasons for stress. For the team, this is a chance to improve and learn a lot. We must build a machine that will be better than the previous one, but this rule is true for everything we do.”
