Fernando Alonso threatens Hamilton as Red Bull chief Horner could replace Perez

Lewis Hamilton on difficult season for Mercedes in November

Lewis Hamilton could finally commit his future to Mercedes this week after revealing he would be sitting down for talks with Toto Wolff to finalise his new contract with the Silver Arrows. The 38-year-old finished second at the Spanish Grand Prix behind Max Verstappen and the Briton is hopeful the team can begin chasing down Red Bull after another tough start to the season.

The seven-time world champion is keen to see Mercedes return to the top and challenge Red Bull for both Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles. And improvements have made to the car with upgrades brought to Monaco last time out.

A double podium for Hamilton and George Russell was enough to demonstrate Mercedes could begin fighting for race victories in the near future and that will be crucial to keeping Hamilton as he looks poised to sign a new two-year deal worth a reported £125million.

For now though, Verstappen remains far and way the runaway leader with five wins from seven races and looks on course to claim a third world title. His team-mate Sergio Perez, however, faces a fight for his future beyond 2023. Follow below for live updates from Express Sport…

Alonso threatens to ‘crush’ Hamilton

Fernando Alonso has issued a threat to Lewis Hamilton as the Aston Martin driver believes the team can ‘crush’ Mercedes at the Canadian Grand Prix in 12 days’ time.

The Spaniard finished outside the top five for the first time this season at the Spanish Grand Prix, but the 41-year-old thinks Montreal will be a perfect chance for revenge.

“In terms of the constructors’, it’s true that Mercedes took some important points from us, but we took points from Ferrari again,” he told reporters after the race. “In Canada we will bring more stuff, in Silverstone too… It will depend on who brings the improvements.

“Even with a normal time, we would have been on a par with Hamilton [in Barcelona] and maybe we would have had a better chance. I think it’s a race and, in Canada, we crush them.”
