Fernando Alonso has been left frustrated four times since outdoing Hamilton
Fernando Alonso is a ‘winning’ driver says Lewis Hamilton
Fernando Alonso last tasted F1 victory a decade ago with the Spaniard spending almost 10 years in the F1 wilderness. The Spaniard picked up his 23rd and most recent win in front of a home crowd in Spain back in May 2013 when he overtook Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg on his way to victory.
Since, he has had little opportunity to add further successes to his tally after struggling at a back-of-the-grid McLaren before taking time away from the sport. On his return, Alonso came back to a midfield Alpine which also yielded little chance of success.
However, there have been chances to end the drought with Alonso – now at Aston Martin – desperate to secure a win this season.
2013 Italian Grand Prix
With Ferrari fans behind him, Alonso needed to beat Sebastian Vettel at Monza to realistically keep his world championship hopes alive. However, the Scuderia struggled for pace in qualifying with Alonso P5 behind his team-mate Felipe Massa.
But, the Spaniard delivered on Sunday with a monumental comeback to split the Red Bulls in P2. He finished just five seconds behind Vettel but after the race admitted he would need to rely on bad luck for the German to win the crown.

2014 Chinese Grand Prix
Alonso was voted the Driver of the Weekend after a phenomenal drive saw him leap in front of the Red Bulls. The double world champion finished P3 but was outshone by the Mercedes pair of Hamilton and Rosberg at the start of the team’s dominance in the sport.
The 20-second gap to the winners looks respectable considering the Silver Arrows’ later authority and would become only one of three podiums in seven years for Alonso.
2014 Hungarian Grand Prix
Alonso was leading a thrilling four-way duel for the race win in the closing laps at a dramatic Hungarian Grand Prix. Mixed weather conditions made the race almost a lottery with Alonso’s Ferrari only just holding on from Lewis Hamilton and Daniel Ricciardo with five laps left.
However, Daniel Ricciardo was on the charge and quickly dispatched of Hamilton and Alonso in consecutive laps. Alonso held on for P2 to secure his second podium of the campaign but this was clearly his best-ever chance of another win.

2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix
Red Bull has dominated the opening five races of 2023, but Saudi Arabia could later be seen as a missed opportunity for Aston Martin.
Alonso blasted into the race lead after jumping Sergio Perez while Max Verstappen started lower down the field after suffering a mechanical error in qualifying. But things soon went wrong as Perez quickly re-passed Alonso and Verstappen hunted down the frontrunners with ease to win.
However, Aston Martin have appeared to lack some pace since Australia and may later look back at the start of their season as their best chance to stand on the top step.
