F1 star Magnussen welcomes newborn almost nine months after first pole position
F1 preview: A lap of the Hungarian Grand Prix
F1 driver Kevin Magnussen has celebrated the birth of his second child almost nine months after securing the first and only pole position of his career. The Dane earned the top spot on the grid for the Brazilian Grand Prix sprint last November, with the timing arousing suspicion among many of his fans.
With Haas finishing eighth in last season’s Constructors’ Championship, Magnussen was always likely to need a huge slice of luck to put his car on pole. Rainy weather provided the perfect conditions, as his team made the call to keep him on slick tyres before the downpour started.
Magnussen made sure he was at the front of the queue to exit the pit-lane in Q3 before pouncing on his opportunity and putting in a perfect lap. None of the 30-year-old’s rivals had time to mount a response, and when informed that he was in P1, he responded on the team radio: “You’re f***ing kidding me.”
Magnussen slipped down to eighth spot in the Brazilian Grand Prix sprint race, and then his weekend took a turn for the worse as he failed to finish Sunday’s main event.

But notching the first pole position of his career would certainly have been grounds for celebration, and the announcement of Magnussen’s second child being born almost nine months after his accomplishment did not go unnoticed.
Posting a picture to Instagram on Tuesday, Magnussen wrote: “Laura is now a big sister. Welcome to the world, Agnes. We love you so much. [My partner] is a superstar.”

Fellow motorsports stars Pietro Fittipaldi and Jenson Button were among those to offer their congratulations in the comments. With spells at McLaren, Renault and Haas on his F1 CV, Magnussen has historically found pole positions, wins and podiums hard to come by.
In fact, the Danish star has only ever made the podium on one occasion – way back in 2014 – although he will hope to make an impact when F1 drivers descend on Hungary for this weekend’s Grand Prix.
“I think the Hungarian Grand Prix is always a good one, the circuit is a tight, little twisty track,” he told Haas’ official website. “It’s kind of difficult for overtaking, but it puts more emphasis on qualifying, so Saturday is very exciting in Hungary always.
“Usually, not this year, it’s the last race before the summer break, so there is also that to look forward to. I’m looking forward to going there and hopefully we can be competitive.”
