Max Verstappen’s world championship win in a dramatic Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is far from being over after Mercedes lodged two appeals to the FIA. Toto Wolff was visibly furious in the final lap fiasco as Verstappen was allowed to close up to Lewis Hamilton after the safety car was called in.
Verstappen had pitted for fresh soft tyres under the safety car, while Hamilton was unable to do so otherwise he would have lost track position.
But Hamilton still looked in control heading into the final lap with the FIA announcing that lapped cars would stay in formation – putting five cars in between Verstappen and Hamilton.
However, Michael Masi changed his mind to the dismay and disbelief of the Mercedes garage.
Verstappen was able to overtake Hamilton on the final lap in dramatic fashion to seal his first world title but, within minutes of the race finishing, Wolff retreated to his Mercedes office where they lodged two protests on the outcome of the race.
Express Sport is on hand to provide live updates throughout the night with both teams being called in to meet with race stewards.
