F1 icon Lewis Hamilton drives round UK streets unnoticed in a car like Mr Bean’s

Sir Lewis Hamilton drives around his home town undetected in a car like Mr Bean’s.

Hamilton, who’s won seven Formula 1 titles with McLaren and Mercedes, speeds around Stevenage, Hertfordshire in a second hand Mini Cooper rather than an ultra stylish sports car.

The champion, who passed his driving test in a Mini in 2002, admits he doesn’t enjoy driving on local roads because he cannot go fast enough.

And the 37-year-old often lets pals chauffeur him when he is back in the UK as he hates being stuck in traffic.

Hamilton said: “When I get home I have a Mini Cooper, like the Mr Bean car.

“I go and take it back to the town I grew up in and drive down memory lane, I go past my first school and first house.

“No-one would expect me in that car – that is for sure.

“I do not like to drive unless I am going fast. I am honestly the best passenger.

“The only time I ever go back is if I got back and drive to my parents. For me I would rather hand my friends the keys.

“I do not like traffic. It is more stressful for me.”

Hamilton told US talkshow host Jimmy Kimmel that he gets confused when returning home about which side of the road to drive on.

He added: “When I get home I don’t know which side of the road I am supposed to be on. I am always on the wrong side initially and I think they have it wrong.”
