F1 fans who paid £92-a-minute ‘kicked out’ of Vegas track as session ends at 4am

F1 fans have been left livid after they kicked out of the Las Vegas track with the practice session heading into the early hours of the morning.

The first practice was cut short after just eight minutes when Carlos Sainz's Ferrari collided with a loose manhole cover. The session was abandoned as officials set to work making emergency track repairs.

When the session eventually got back underway, it did so without F1 fans as officials made the unpopular decision to close off fans areas around the racetrack. A statement from F1 said: "Due to logistical considerations for fans and our staff. We have decided to close all areas reserved for Las Vegas GP fans at 1:30 local time. We look forward to welcoming fans later for an exciting FP3 and qualifying."

Fans in attendance were left furious at the decision, with some paying $919 for their tickets – equating to $115-per-minute (£92-per-minute). "They really kicked us out of an event we payed for and didn’t get to experience with no directions, sketchy roads and absolutely no help…Vegas GP you will pay," one fan fumed.

"I was one of the fans. They came and kicked us out at 1:30. So they will drive FP2 in front of an empty track," a second said. And another added: "They kicked us out! I want my money back!"

While a fifth fumed: "We waited till 2AM to see the race in person. Then, F1 announces that the event is closed due to the staff. You look forward to seeing everyone at the free practice 3 and at tomorrow's qualifying. Now @F1 is doing the P2 after they kicked us out."

Free practice two was extended to 90 minutes and got underway in front of an empty arena – with some fans joking the event might be the 'biggest embarrassment in F1 history'.

Charles Leclerc posted the quickest time of the practice, while Sainz managed to finish second after his problems in FP1. Amazingly, when the chequered flag came down it almost 4am on the Las Vegas strip.
