F1 fans notice Carlos Sainz’s reaction to strange interview at end of Miami GP
Offbeat news from the world of sport
Formula One fans have noticed Carlos Sainz's hilarious reaction to a bizarre interview he was involved in following the conclusion of the maiden Miami Grand Prix.
The Spaniard saw-off late challenges from Red Bull's Sergio Perez to claim third, having started second on the grid but being immediately overtaken by Max Verstappen, in what represents a significant turn in fortunes for the Ferrari driver.
Having been unable to finish the last Grand Prix at Imola after being hit by Daniel Ricciardo on the opening lap, a podium finish for Sainz was exactly the boost he needed ahead of his home Grand Prix in two weeks time in Barcelona.
However, it wasn't all plain-sailing for Sainz though as a post-race interview left the driver visibly baffled by the approach of the interviewer – which didn't go unnoticed by Formula One fans.
Sainz was told he did a 'great job baby' by the American interviewer, with footage showing him rolling his eyes following the completion of the interview as he was clearly left stunned by the rather odd approach from the comments.
Fans were left equally confused, with @xminustDC saying: 'This post-F1 race interview with Sainz is very awkward. Very, very awkward' while @winnywoooo added: 'Sainz rolling his eyes as he walked away from that post race interview was beautiful.'
Others believed it was further evidence of the gimmicky approach that America seems to have with F1, with @JamieRomaine17 declaring: 'This interview with Sainz is the most American interview going' while @Subbia1988 dubbed the events as 'painful'.
HAVE YOUR SAY! Did the Miami Grand Prix live up to the hype and expectations? Comment below.
The interview was conducted by former American racing driver Willy Ribbs, who has ties to Formula One as he became the first black man to drive an F1 car when he tested though he never raced – making him just one of two, alongside Lewis Hamilton, to be behind the seats of an F1 vehicle.
While he does have a relationship with F1, fans were clearly unimpressed by his approach to the interview and Sainz was equally uncomfortable by the manner of the questions.
Formula One returns to Miami later this year for the Austin Grand Prix, while there's three US dates on the calendar in 2023 with the introduction of Las Vegas.
