Ex-Red Bull driver is targeted by violent bat-wielding thieves
Former Red Bull driver Robert Doornbos is targeted by violent bat-wielding thieves in Amsterdam… less than a year after Ajax star Dusan Tadic was similarly ambushed by armed robbers in the Dutch capital
- The 41-year-old was clubbed over the head as thieves stole his phone and watch
- The thieves are thought to have used a GPS tracker on his car to follow him
- Doornbos joked that his days of wearing expensive watches were behind him
Former Formula One driver Robert Doornbos was involved in a violent robbery in Amsterdam in March, according to reports.
The ex-Red Bull star was ambushed by two thieves outside his home on March 18 in the Dutch capital who clubbed him over the head with a bat and stole his Rolex watch and mobile phone.
It is likely that the robbery was planned, as Doornbos discovered a GPS tracking device under his car.
Ajax winger Dusan Tadic was targeted in a similar manner by thieves last July, getting caught up in a scuffle, but escaped without having any possessions stolen.
A few days later, he took part in Ajax’s Dutch Super Cup match against PSV and was pictured with plasters wrapped around his knuckles.

In an interview with Dutch outlet RTL Boulevard, Doornbos shared that he had been shocked by the robbery, but was coming to terms with the event.
‘It was intense,’ the former Minardi driver shared, before joking: ‘I no longer wear expensive watches, only an Apple Watch, so at least I can count my steps.’
The attack was perpetuated, according to police, by two men aged between 25 and 30 years old.
A statement shared stated that the attack took place ‘around 00.15am’ and that Doornbos had attempted to defend himself from the bat before the robbery took place.
Doornbos competed in Formula 1 between 2005 and 2006 before joining the Champ Car World Series in 2007.
He later competed in the IndyCar Series, and now works as a racing pundit for Dutch channel Ziggo Sport.
