Ex-Red Bull ace Webber wants King Charles to knight unsung F1 hero Adrian Newey
Formula E drivers teach children about electric vehicles and how to race them
Former F1 driver Mark Webber believes that Red Bull Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey should be ‘knighted’ for his work over the years. He is widely viewed as one of the catalysts for the team’s success since joining them in 2006, with the RB19 this season showcasing his finest work as Max Verstappen prepares for his third successive title.
Red Bull’s dominance in Formula One has prompted numerous changes from other sides that are desperately hopeful of closing the gap on the championship leaders. However, their efforts have been to minimal avail due to Verstappen’s brilliance matched with Newey’s excellence behind the scenes.
As a result, some have called for the latter to receive the ultimate praise by being knighted for his services to the sport, as well as Red Bull, having designed cars that have gone on to win 13 titles in total – more than Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton combined. Former driver Webber is among those to laud Newey for the work he has done, telling F1: “It was just great to have him as the technical spine of the whole department.
“Of course, he has got other people around him, and he’s a tremendous listener – you don’t have the career that Adrian’s had if an individual like him doesn’t listen.

“I love how understated he is, I love how immensely humble he is. He should be knighted, end of. It’s not even a discussion in my book.”
Red Bull were named the F1 Constructors’ Champions for the second time in a row in Japan following their dominant campaign, and Newey’s role in such success cannot be understated by those within the camp. However, it remains to be seen whether the technical officer can continue to stake his claim for plaudits from outside of the Formula One sphere next season, and if a hat-trick of Constructors’ Championships would receive the praise that is warranted.

Robert Doornbos is among those to have given Newey the ultimate praise as well, claiming that he is the ‘Einstein of F1’ when recalling a time when he questioned the possibility of stacking pedals. He continued: “Adrian is like the Einstein of F1. I really understood his brain during a test day when we were trying something new on the car.
“At one stage, he asked me if I thought it would be possible to drive an F1 car with two feet on top of each other, with the brake on the bottom and the throttle on top of the brake, so the car could be sleeker and slicker on the front end.” I was like, ‘Physically that’s not possible.’ He looked at me and wrote something down. He said, ‘I want to change something.’ I said, ‘What?’ He said, ‘It’s between the steering wheel and the engine.’ I said, ‘That’s me!’
“Basically, if you give him a free hand, he wants to have a robot inside the car or something, so the balance of the human factor and him thinking only in numbers and data is quite extraordinary to work with. He pushes the boundaries.”
