Christian Horner has hit back at Zak Brown for his “shocking” comments where he suggested Red Bull had cheated. Brown’s letter demanded harsh penalties as Red Bull’s budget cap breach would have given the team a “significant advantage”.

Horner was asked about his reaction to the leaked letter in today’s team principal’s press conference just hours before the start of qualifying at the United States Grand Prix. Horner appeared angry at the note, stressing the team were “disappointed” with the comments.

The Red Bull boss explained: “Obviously Zak’s letter which wasn’t copied to us, obviously we’ve had sight of that letter, and it’s tremendously disappointing. For a fellow competitor to be accusing you of cheating. To be accusing you of fraudulent activity is shocking.

“It’s absolutely shocking that another competitor, without the facts and without any knowledge of the details, can be making that kind of accusation. We’ve been on trial because of public accusations since Singapore.

“The rhetoric of cheats, the rhetoric that we have had this enormous benefit. The numbers that have been put in the media are miles out of reality. The damage that does to the brand, to our partners, to our drivers, to our workforce in an age where mental health is prevalent.”

Horner then stressed Red Bull had been the victim of “fictitious allegations” from their rivals. Horner added: “You cannot go around just making that king of allegation without any fact or substance so we absolutely are appalled at the behaviour of some of our competitors.”
