Lewis Hamilton will want to avoid the nightmare situation of Saudi Arabia where he failed to make it out of Q1 when the Australian Grand Prix qualifying gets underway at 6am BST. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen is expected to be challenging Charles Leclerc for pole position.
Hamilton is not confident that Mercedes can fix their current woes this weekend and he could be set for another disappointing run out.
“Just nothing we change on the car makes a difference at the moment. So that’s the difficult thing,” the Brit said. “You get in [to the track] very optimistic, make changes, and then it doesn’t seem to be wanting to improve.
“So we made some changes going to P2 and it ended up being a bit harder for me. I don’t know. It is just a tricky car. There is not a lot we can do. This is the way it is. I just have to drive with it.
“That’s the frustrating thing, you’re trying to push and catch and even when you do a decent lap, it’s 1.2s down so it’s difficult.”
Good morning
Good morning and welcome to Express Sport’s live coverage of the Australian Grand Prix qualifying session.
All eyes will be on Lewis Hamilton in Q1 after he was one of the first five cars dumped out in Saudi Arabia last time out.
The Brit started the race in 16th place and only just scraped into the points positions by crossing the chequered flag 10th.
Mercedes have had similar struggles in all three practice sessions in Melbourne and a major upgrade may not arrive until F1 returns to Europe.
