Alfa Romeo became the latest team to reveal its car for the 2021 Formula One season as it showcased its C41 model at an event in Poland.
Hosted at the Grand Theatre in Warsaw, drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi, as well as reserve driver Robert Kubica, were among a handful of people inside the theatre for the big reveal.
Alfa Romeo endured a difficult 2020 season in which they finished eighth in the constructors’ championship and there are big expectations that the C41 can deliver vastly improved performances.
Alfa Romeo Racing launched the C41 car they will use in the 2021 Formula One season
‘The launch of a new car is always an emotional moment, the culmination of months of effort from everyone back at the factory and the start of a new adventure,’ Team Principal Frederic Vasseur said.
‘I think the philosophy upon which the team is based remains the same – we have to do a better job tomorrow than we are doing today.’
Tighter regulations for all teams ahead of the 2021 season means that cars will carry over many of the components from their 2020 model.
Aerodynamic changes are free to be altered but any structural changes must come as part of two ‘tokens’ teams can use to make changes.
The sleek new design showcased a new nosecone, which they team focused on developing
Alfa Romeo’s developers elected to use those tokens to improve the nosecone in a bid to improve performance. It is a key structural component but has the added benefit of improving aerodynamic abilities.
‘We finished last season in P8, so we have to target a better result in 2021. To do so, we have to keep improving in each department, trackside and back at HQ,’ Vasseur added.
‘Every team on the grid has very high expectations right now: all the teams expect to do a good job in the winter and to be in a good position for the first race, but soon it will be the time for everyone to show their cards.’
The C41 will get its maiden outing on track on Friday as part of a shakedown at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Attention will then turn to a pivotal three days of pre-season testing in the desert setting of Sakhir fro March 12 to March 14.
Due to the nature of restrictions, many of the component’s of last season’s C39 car remain
That three-day window will represent the last opportunity for teams to make adjustments and fine tune the car ahead of the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix on March 28.
‘The C41 is the result of a very unusual situation in Formula One, in which the regulations have made us unable to develop an entire new car for this year,’ Technical Director Jan Monchaux added.
‘We will know the car much better than usual when we get to testing, but it’s still going to be crucial to make the most of those three days to verify that reality matches our expectations and to get to know the new tyres.
‘We are ready for the new season and we can’t wait to see our new car on track.’
