A busy week in the F1 driver market has continued with Williams confirming Alex Albon will remain with the team next season and beyond after signing a multi-year deal with the team
Albon was a hot prospect as he came through the Red Bull stable, starting out with AlphaTauri before graduating to the main team as a replacement for Pierre Gasly. Like Gasly, Albon was put to the sword by teammate Max Verstappen in 2020 and lost his drive and sat out 2021, although he remained a Red Bull-affiliated driver.
The British-born Thai driver has bounced back in style, impressing with backmarkers Williams over the first half of this season after replacing Mercedes-bound George Russell.
Albon had been linked with Aston Martin in the wake of Sebastian Vettel’s retirement announcement last week, but that seat has been quickly snapped up by Fernando Alonso, leaving the Spaniard’s current team, Alpine, in turmoil.
Alpine announced their intention to promote reserve driver Oscar Piastri, but the Australian emphatically rejected their statement last night and is thought to be eyeing a move to McLaren to replace the struggling Daniel Ricciardo.
As for Albon, he can look forward to the stability of a long-term deal with Williams, although it remains to be seen who his teammate will be as the team are considering replacing Nicholas Latifi.
As he announced his new deal he tweeted: "I understand that, with my agreement, Williams Racing have put out a press release this afternoon that I am driving for them next year. This is right and I have signed a contract with Williams for 2023. I will be driving for Williams next year. Let’s gooo @williamsracing
