Sam Girard had big Game 1 against Blues before landing in the X-ray room

Avalanche defenseman Sam Girard had a tremendous performance Tuesday in a 3-2 overtime Game 1 victory against the Blues, but he could have sustained a lower-body injury.

Girard had Colorado’s second goal, posted seven shots and made a team-high four blocked shots in 23:16 of ice time. He was on the ice when Josh Manson scored the overtime winner and was the first to celebrate with his blueline partner.

Afterward, however, Girard was a passenger in a golf cart to and from the X-ray room at Ball Arena. He appeared to limp back into the cart. Replays showed Girard took a puck to the leg during Game 1.

On Wednesday morning at the arena, Avs coach Jared Bednar was asked if Girard was feeling all right. “He is, yep,” the coach said.

More will be known about Girard in Thursday’s morning skate at Ball Arena ahead of Game 2.

If Girard isn’t able to play, the Avs have three healthy defensemen hoping to make their debuts in the postseason — Jack Johnson, Ryan Murray and Kurtis MacDermid.
