Avalanche acquires Swedish goalie Jonas Johansson from Buffalo Sabres – The Denver Post

The Avalanche acquired a backup goaltender Saturday by sending a 2021 sixth-round draft pick to Buffalo for Jonas Johansson, a 25-year-old Swede.

Johansson, who made his NHL debut against the Avalanche on Feb. 4, 2020, has played in seven games this season, posting a 3.79 goals-against average and .884 save percentage. He is a pending restricted free agent, but if he doesn’t play 15 more games this season he will become an unrestricted free agent, according to CapFriendly.com.

Johansson, 6-foot-5, 220 pounds, has a career NHL record of 1-8-2 with a 3.40 GAA and a .888 SP. He could make his debut with the Avs as early as Monday when Colorado begins a consecutive-night stretch at Arizona.

Johansson replaces Hunter Miska as Philipp Grubauer’s backup. Miska (4.16 GAA, .838 SP) was highly ineffective in replacing Pavel Francouz, who has yet to play this season because of a lower-body injury. Francouz is on long-term injured reserve.

Johansson was the Sabres’ third-round pick (61st overall) in 2014. He played parts of four years for Buffalo’s AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans, producing a 25-11-4 record with a 2.63 GAA and .908 SP. He became an AHL All-Star last season while producing a 14-4-3 record, 2.28 GAA and .921 SP.
