San Francisco 49ers General Manager John Lynch has confirmed that third quarterback Trey Lance is working hard in the offseason as he steps up his return following two surgeries on his ankle last season. The 22-year-old was selected by the 49ers as the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
However, Lance’s trajectory hasn’t exactly gone as expected, with the quarterback struggling to rise past Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold. And Lance’s uncertainty raised trade rumours ahead of this year’s NFL Draft, but they could rumble on throughout the remainder of 2023.
A trade away could largely depend on Purdy’s recovery from ulnar collateral ligament surgery on his right elbow. Nonetheless, Lance is training hard ahead of the new season to prove his worth. “He’s been out there throwing, doing everything,” 49ers GM Lynch told reporters.
The 49ers are also in the market to add another quarterback to their ranks, with free agents being explored, even after the one-year acquisition of veteran Sam Darnold. Whether that plays a part in where Lance’s future lies is yet to be seen.
“They’re looking to fill out everything with the [undrafted] free agents,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. “We’d love to get a fourth guy here. We’ll see which one it is. But we’ll be all right, though, in the offseason when we get to training camp.
“Hopefully, we’ll get Brock back soon. But regardless, we’d love a fourth guy here. You never know how much we end up doing in the OTA sessions, but it’s been good having two guys out there just throwing. They’ve been on their own.”

Ian Rapoport believes that there’s more value in trading Lance away rather than keeping him. But the NFL guru says any movement on Lance may have to wait until August.
“First of all, this kind of goes without saying, to have the No. 3 overall pick end up being the potential third-string quarterback on your roster is awkward,” Rapoport said late last week. “And at some point there is more value out there in trading him than there is in keeping him on the roster. There’s going to be some team – and maybe in August… if someone loses a quarterback, maybe Trey Lance is better on another roster.”
