Tom Brady set to emulate David Beckham with move that will determine NFL future

Tom Brady is reportedly in talks about becoming a limited partner of the Las Vegas Raiders just three months after announcing his retirement from the NFL. The former quarterback has also acquired a minority stake in WNBA team the Las Vegas Aces since stopping playing, who are also run by Raiders controlling owner Mark Davis.
ESPN reports Brady, 45, is in deep discussions about partnering with Davis again. Negotiations are said to have been taking place for weeks and is potentially reaching a resolution soon, one way or another.
A proposed investment by Brady would reportedly be passive and not come with any control over the organisation regarding business and football decisions. Any partnership would require approval from 24 NFL team owners in the 32-franchise league, as is needed for any new owners acquiring stakes.
Such an agreement being reached and finalised would also prevent Brady from coming out of retirement for a second time to play for the Raiders or any other team in the league. A player-part-owner role would require further approval from the league’s owners.
A prospective move into minority ownership within the professional sports league he once played draws parallels to David Beckham, who co-owns Major League Soccer side Inter Miami after previously being on the Los Angeles Galaxy. The former footballer also owns a 10% stake in League Two team Salford City.
For Brady, becoming a limited partner would look more like the latter than the former of Beckham’s investments. In Miami, he is the club’s president and public face of the franchise, whereas, with Salford, Beckham is one of several minority owners.
At this stage, Brady exerting anywhere near the influence over the Raiders as Beckham does in Miami is far-fetched. The ESPN report make clear that would not be the case.

Such a move coming to fruition would see Brady become the highest-profile player partnering with an NFL franchise. It is far from out of the blue for the former quarterback, though, as discussions were reportedly held with the Miami Dolphins over the last two years about becoming a minority owner there.
It would also represent a return to the league with another team not named the New England Patriots. Pats owner Robert Kraft announced only yesterday that Brady will be a guest of honour at Gillette Stadium for the 2023 home opener.
Fans in New England hope he will someday re-sign on a one-day contract and retire as a Patriot. Such a prospect seems remote should he become part of the Raiders’ ownership.
