Tom Brady makes feelings clear on offer to return to New England Patriots

NFL legend Tom Brady has responded to the news that the New England Patriots plan to honour him at their home opener next season. Patriots chief Robert Kraft announced on Thursday that he had extended an invitation to Brady to be welcomed to Gillette Stadium for their first home game of the 2023 regular season.

At the time it wasn’t known who or when that would be, but after the full schedule was released it was learned that the Patriots’ begin the season at home in Week One when Super Bowl runners-up Philadelphia Eagles are in Foxborough. That game takes place on Sunday, September 10.

In an interview on Good Morning Football on Thursday, Kraft announced that he had invited Brady to return to New England for their home opener. The Patriots chief went on to label the former quarterback as the “greatest player in the history of the NFL”.

“Since today is schedule day, I’d like to make one little announcement that I think may have some news for real football fans, and it actually relates to our schedule,” said Kraft.

“I know our opening day should be (against) a very competitive team, they (NFL) haven’t shared with us who that is exactly. But I’d like to know that, and it all relates to this blue square (badge).

“Because I’ve had a lot of people like Bon Jovi and Meek Mill, Mike Imperioli and a guy by the name of Tom Brady, all wear this and spread it. I’m thinking that the NFL is over a century old, and 20 percent of those years of the NFL, the greatest player in the history of the game played right here at Foxborough.

“I’m happy to tell you and your audience that I invited him back to come here and be with us at the opening game, and let the fans in New England thank him for the great services he gave us over 20 years. And it will be the beginning of many celebrations to honour Tom Brady and say thank you for what he did for us, those 20 years playing for the New England Patriots.”

After the announcement was circulated on social media, the NFL’s Instagram account featured a post about the news. It was here where Brady gave his first public response to being invited back by the Patriots.

Rather than use words, Brady’s comment simply featured several prayer hands and heart emojis. In the Patriots’ own Instagram post about Brady, Jon Bon Jovi, lead singer of rock band Bon Jovi and a Patriots fan, commented by saying: “I need to be there. The return of THE KING !!!”

Brady retired from the NFL at the end of last season, after spending two years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Prior to making the switch to Florida, the 45-year-old had spent 20 years with the Patriots, during which time he won six Super Bowl titles. Brady holds the record for the most touchdown passes in NFL history with 649, and also leads the all-time passing yards stats with 89,214.
