Teddy Bridgewater injury update: Broncos QB out vs. Ravens, enters concussion protocol

The Broncos had to put their undefeated season in the hands of backup quarterback Drew Lock in the second half of their game Sunday against the Ravens.

Starting QB Teddy Bridgewater was ruled out for the remainder of the AFC clash after being evaluated for a concussion, the team announced. Bridgewater absorbed a helmet-to-helmet hit from Ravens linebacker Odafe Oweh toward the end of the first half.

Before the injury, Bridgewater completed 7 of 16 passes for 65 yards with a touchdown. The Broncos went into the halftime locker room trailing 17-7.

Bridgewater has enjoyed a standout campaign in his first season in Denver. He was the only quarterback to have recorded a completion percentage of 75 or above in each game before Sunday, and his 76.8 completion percentage was second in the league. He had passed for 827 yards and four touchdowns and rushed 11 times for 44 yards.

Bridgewater joined Denver in an offseason trade with the Panthers and then won a quarterback competition with incumbent starter Lock in the preseason. Lock was coming off a disappointing campaign in which he was 4-9 in 13 starts. He completed 57.3 percent of his passes for 2,933 yards, with 16 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

Bridgewater similarly struggled in Carolina, throwing for 15 touchdowns and 11 picks, though he completed 69.1 percent of his passes for 3,733 yards in 15 games. He also rushed for 279 yards on 53 carries, with five touchdowns.

Lock’s third-quarter performance won’t give Broncos fans much encouragement about the team’s chances of coming back. He completed 5 of 9 passes for 38 yards and was sacked twice.
