Rams’ Jalen Ramsey references Mookie Betts in recruiting pitch to Patriots holdout Stephon Gilmore
Jalen Ramsey is using Stephon Gilmore’s holdout from the Patriots as a recruiting opportunity.
Gilmore, 30, is looking for a raise on the $7 million base salary he’s due in the final year of his contract. He’s hoping to get one more lucrative, long-term deal before his career ends, but the Patriots haven’t shown a willingness to extend him.
Thus, Ramsey saw an opening and decided to ask Gilmore on Twitter how he’s doing amid his holdout.

More notably, Ramsey invoked the name of Mookie Betts while tweeting at Gilmore about a potential trade from New England to Los Angeles.
Betts was traded to the Dodgers from the Red Sox in a multi-team deal and went on to finish second in the NL MVP race and win a World Series in his first, pandemic-shortened season in Los Angeles.
Evidently, Ramsey sees parallels between that situation and the one involving Gilmore, the 2019 Defensive Player of the Year and two-time All-Pro.
As nice as it might be for Ramsey and the Rams to acquire Gilmore, it could prove difficult. While Los Angeles has just under $7 million in cap space and could easily find a way to fit Gilmore’s salary under the cap this offseason, signing him to the type of extension he desires and giving him a raise this year could prove difficult.
Additionally, the Rams are a bit light on future draft capital after trading two future first-round picks to the Lions in the Matthew Stafford deal. They still have five Day 2 picks in the next two drafts, but they may not want to spend those types of resources on a 30-year-old cornerback.
Gilmore’s trade market is certainly worth monitoring as long as he’s holding out from Patriots camp. While the Rams could be a suitor for Gilmore, there may be other teams that are better poised to compete for his services from a compensatory standpoint.
But hey, the Rams have previously been aggressive on the trade market in moves for Ramsey and Stafford. So as long as Les Snead is in charge, they can’t be counted out.
