Peyton Manning jokes about bugged conversations on ‘MNF’: ‘Like the Patriots used to do’
ESPN’s decision to have the Manning brothers call “Monday Night Football” games continued to pay dividends during Monday’s Packers-Lions game, as the elder Manning took no time at all to drop a joke at the expense of a former longtime rival New England.
Near the start of the first quarter, Peyton Manning noted how Green Bay was more willing to establish the run against Detroit, which he said in a Friday conversation with Eli Manning should be a point of emphasis after the Packers’ 38-3 loss to the Saints.
It was enough of a coincidence that the elder Manning suggested their conversation had been bugged, “Kind of like the Patriots used to do back in the day.”
Eli Manning then asked whether his brother was nervous returning to Lucas Oil Stadium following Super Bowl 46, considering the Patriots practiced at the Colts’ facility all week. Peyton Manning doubled down on the joke, saying he wouldn’t discuss plays in the locker room.
“Every time I played against New England, I used to go and talk to my receivers like in the shower, in the far corner,” Peyton Manning said. “Like, ‘Don’t talk about a play next to my locker.’ Because I know it’s bugged. I know it’s got a hot mic in there. We’re in the shower. It’s very strange to see seven guys hanging out back there in the shower. But take all precautions. . . .”
Peyton Manning certainly was right to take precautions against the Patriots, considering their extended history of cheating scandals, including the 2007 Spygate and 2014 Deflategate scandals.
Either way, Peyton Manning continued to showcase his comedic chops alongside his brother on the “MNF” megacast. Fans can enjoy that for the remainder of Monday’s game between the Packers and Lions, and again the following week during Cowboys vs. Eagles.
