Panthers hiring former Colts coach Frank Reich as head coach
The Carolina Panthers are hiring Frank Reich as their next head coach, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Thursday.
The team later announced the news.
Reich spent the past five seasons as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, compiling a 40-33-1 record before being fired midway through the 2022 season.
In Carolina, Reich replaces Matt Rhule, who was fired five games into the 2022 campaign, and Steve Wilks, who nearly led Carolina to an NFC South title as interim coach and was a top candidate for the full-time job. Wilks intends to coach elsewhere in 2023, Pelissero reported.
As a player, Reich played one season as quarterback of the Panthers in 1995, the franchise’s first year in the NFL. Reich started Carolina’s first three NFL games, going 0-3 under center.
Around The NFL will have more on Reich’s hire shortly.
