NFL Draft rumors: Saints attempting to trade up for top-10 pick
Are the Saints going to make the first big splash at the 2021 NFL Draft?
New Orleans is looking to trade into the top 10 of this year’s draft, per multiple reports. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport noted that the Saints have been one of the “loudest and most active teams” ahead of Thursday’s first round, but moving up from the No. 28 overall pick would be “very expensive.”
So, who could the team target if it managed to jump into the top 10?
“The only real ‘need need’ the Saints have right now is at left cornerback, so could they be coming all the way up for a corner? Possibly,” Rapoport said. “The other thing to consider — and this is something that our colleague Jane Slater alluded to on Twitter — maybe it’s another position. I know they’ve done a lot of quarterback homework. I’m not sure they have a surefire starter.
“Could that be the target for the Saints? Obviously a lot of things would have to go into it, but we will be watching.”
FOX’s Jay Glazer also reported that the Saints are in pursuit of a top-10 pick, but he said they aren’t interested in selecting a quarterback.
If New Orleans is set on handing over Drew Brees’ old job to either Taysom Hill or Jameis Winston, then snagging a top cornerback would seem to be the obvious choice. Alabama’s Patrick Surtain II and South Carolina’s Jaycee Horn are both expected to be taken off the board early in the first round, so the Saints may have one of those prospects in mind.
