Madden rookie ratings: First-year quarterbacks predict what their rookie ratings will be
The countdown to Madden-oliday is officially on.
With the 2021 NFL Draft in the rear-view mirror and rookie mini-camp camp underway or finished for all 32 teams, voluntary workouts are the next mile marker in the 2021 offseason.
But nestled comfortably in the NFL offseason is the release of “Madden” and the ratings that precede it. Of this year’s first-round rookie QBs — Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, Justin Fields — four of them recently took to the camera to predict what their “Madden” ratings might be for the 2021 edition of the game.
Mac Jones, Patriots: “I think my ‘Madden’ rating will be probably a little lower than people will give me credit for. I don’t like, maybe like, 85? But I know they’re gonna lowball me.”
Justin Fields, Bears: “To be honest, I think my ‘Madden’ rating’s gonna be like a 78 through an 81. Of course, it’s just because, rookies.”
Trey Lance, 49ers: “I think my rookie ‘Madden’ rating will be 88, because I can do a lot of things, I can make plays.”
Zach Wilson, Jets: “My ‘Madden’ rating should be a 90, because it’s like, OK but it’s not great, because I haven’t done anything yet.”
(We’re not too sure Wilson has played “Madden” before.)
The only quarterback absent from the video was Jags passer and No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence. It’s safe to bet that he’ll probably grade out in the low ’80s, as is the custom for most rookie players, regardless of hype or draft position coming out of school.
Fields, known for his accuracy on the field, is equally as accurate off it, with his 78-to-81 range probably spot on for him. On the high end, all three of Wilson (90 overall), Lance (88 overall) and Jones (85 overall) are probably a bit out there, but hey, can’t hurt
In all, though, nothing to get worked up over: “Madden” ratings change throughout the year with updates and adjustments, so these passers will likely end the year with higher ratings than when they started.
Maybe Wilson can pick up a PS5 and “Madden 21” in the meantime.
