Jets QB Zach Wilson benched for Chris Streveler in loss to Jaguars
Jets quarterback Zach Wilson was benched in favor of Chris Streveler near the end of the third quarter of New York’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night.
It was Streveler’s first game action of the season, but he provided a spark for a stagnant offense.
Wilson was making his second straight start, after previously being replaced by QB Mike White after a disappointing 10-3 loss to the Patriots in Week 11. But after sitting for three weeks, Wilson got back his starting role last week when White was unable to get cleared for a ribs injury suffered in Week 14. Wilson again started Thursday night versus the Jaguars, but unfortunately, the second-year QB didn’t start the game off strong, going 9 for 18 for 92 yards passing and an interception before the Jets decided to bring in Streveler.
Wilson, last year’s No. 2 overall pick, was bombarded by boos by the Jets fanbase at every wrong turn on Thursday. And with under four minutes left in the third, head coach Robert Saleh finally made a switch, bringing in Streveler after another three-and-out led to the team’s fifth punt of the night.
In his first drive, Streveler led the Jets on a 16-play march down the field, collecting four first downs and 83 yards in the process, both more than New York had in the seven previous possessions with Wilson at the helm. While the drive did not result in points, as the Jets couldn’t convert on a fourth-and-2 from the Jacksonville 13-yard line, the crowd nevertheless expressed its appreciation for Streveler after each play. He was 3 for 5 for 41 yards passing, along with 37 yards rushing, on the drive.
Streveler signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League out of college, spending two years in the league before he left to explore NFL opportunities. And after seeing limited time with the Cardinals over the 2020 and 2021 seasons before coming to New York, Streveler now finds himself as the fourth Jets QB to play this season.
