George Kittle has good reason for not inviting Tim Tebow to Tight End University summit
Tim Tebow’s invitation to the tight end summit wasn’t lost in the mail.
49ers Pro Bowl tight end George Kittle finally gets to hold his long-awaited tight end summit this summer, hosting a tight-ends only event alongside the recently retired Greg Olsen and Chiefs pass catcher Travis Kelce — but there’s an interesting ommission from the group.
Tim Tebow, making his return to the field as a tight end for the Jaguars, could probably use the invite more than a fair amount of tight ends who will be traveling to the camp.
Kittle offered a fair explanation for why Tebow didn’t get an invite on a recent episode of the “Pardon My Take” podcast:
So, nothing against Tim Tebow, but I found it hard to invite — I wish nothing but the best for Tim Tebow, and I hope he has a fantastic season playing tight end — but it’s hard for me not to invite a backup tight end on, let’s say the New York Giants, as opposed to inviting a guy who just started playing the tight end position because we do have limited spots. I wish I could make it so every NFL tight end can come, [so] it’s accessible to everybody. But what we tried to do this year, we wanted to pay for everything for all the tight ends that come to kind of make it a special event for all tight ends.
There’s no guarantee that Tebow will make the Jaguars’ 53-man roster, though Jacksonville head coach Urban Meyer is seemingly giving Tebow every opportunity for him to make the squad.
“If he’s on a roster this year, and he plays tight end, we would love to have him, we would love to work with him,” Olsen added. “Once he’s officially a tight end, we would love to work with him.”
The event — aptly named Tight End University summit — is taking place in Nashville, Tenn., with invites being sent to tight ends around the league. So far, there have been at least 50 committs, including TJ Hockenson, Zach Ertz and Kyle Pitts.
Kittle says he’s rented out an entire hotel for tight ends, with the rooms completely booked out.
Maybe Tebow can catch the highlights on YouTube.
